With heavy hearts, we are saddened to share word of the death of Kaelia Nelson, one of our current local titleholders, a Miss Nebraska contestant in 2017, and a former Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen contestant. Kaelia was a young woman exemplifying the phrase ‘big things come in little packages’: she was a petite powerhouse, exuding talent and energy when she danced, and demonstrating leadership and confidence in every part of her life. She devoted herself to a cause she was extremely passionate about, ‘Stomping the Stigma: Creating Conversations about Mental Illness.’ Kaelia was truly a bright light, shining everywhere she touched throughout our state.
“I would absolutely love to win Miss Nebraska and get to represent this amazing state, but my main goal isn’t about the crown on my head,” said Kaelia last spring. “Instead, it’s the message I have to share and the people I get to meet because of it. It’s what you set your mind and heart to that will count in the long run.”
We are simply heartbroken and ask that you keep Kaelia’s parents, loved ones, and friends in your thoughts and prayers. She will always be a part of our Miss Nebraska family.
The service commemorating her life will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 2090 Emerson Avenue in Alliance, Nebraska. Pastor Tim Stadem will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-7 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be given to the family to be divided between a mental illness organization, the Miss Nebraska Organization, and the Peru State College Cheer Team.
Online condolences may be left at www.batesgould.com with Bates-Gould Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Thank you to Kamie Stephen for sharing this beautiful image of a beautiful girl, inside and out.
